Free ebooks for fantasy and science fiction fans
This blog is about new paperless reading materials like downloadable audio books, ebooks, and online magazines, made available to you through the Appleton Public Library. I plan to provide helpful tips on using these new products, along with reviews of audio books, music on cd, and movies on DVD and Blu-ray. There may even be an occasional post on genealogy. The library is changing as rapidly as your access to media and the Internet. We want to keep on top of the trends and bring you information and entertainment in a way that fits your life today. -Diana
Of course you can access books from Wisconsin's Digital Library for free using your InfoSoup library card, but there are other places on the web where you can get free ebooks, and today I'd like to talk about a site with free ebooks in the science fiction and fantasy fields.
Baen is a publisher who works with many major authors in the science fiction and fantasy world. They have made some of those titles available to readers at no charge.
Just go to the Baen Free Library site and check the list for a title you'd like to try. If you click on a title there are sample chapters to view. The e-books are available in many formats, and can be downloaded in seconds, without having to register or create an account.
Some of my favorites from the free e-books:
science fiction: The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold, who has won five Hugo Awards and three Nebula Awards
military science fiction: March Upcountry by David Weber and John Ringo, both very popular authors
science fiction with a female protagonist: On Basilisk Station by David Weber
fantasy: Sheepfarmer's Daughter by award-winning author Elizabeth Moon
