Did You Know? 2012 Program Highlights

Did You Know?  2012 Highlights

It’s hard to believe 2012 is about to come to an end. It’s been an exciting year for adult programming. We’ve hosted twenty-two Music @ the Library concerts, thirty-nine Thursday Movies and documentary discussions, six Meet the Author visits, and numerous book discussions, forums, lectures, and demonstrations dealing with diverse topics such as: art, politics, home organization, health issues, gardening, travel, and much more. Many program ideas came from you, our patrons and program attendees. Please continue to share book and movie titles, names of local bands, and other ideas you may have at eeisen@apl.org.

Highlights of the year included:

January 23 film discussion of the documentary called Happy: Writer and director Roko Belic took us on a journey from the swamps of Louisiana to the slums of Kolkata in search of what really makes people happy. Inspiring! Available on InfoSoup.

March 11 Island Magic Steel Drum Band concert: A blend of reggae, calypso, jazz, and classical music by Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffett, Harry Belafonte, UB40, and others.

May 2 film discussion of Race to Nowhere: A close-up look at the pressures on today's students, offering an intimate view of lives packed with activities, leaving little room for down-time or family time. Parents today are expected to raise high-achieving children, who are good at everything: academics, sports, the arts, and community service. The film tackles the tragic side of our often achievement-obsessed culture, with interviews that explore the hidden world of over-burdened schedules, student suicide, academic cheating, young people who have checked out. Available on InfoSoup.

July 23 Foggy Valley Boyz concert: This four-piece local band specializes in old-time country music including songs by Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, etc. A great time was had by all!

July-August "Experience China" Photo Exhibit: A traveling exhibit on loan from the Confucius Institute at University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

November 8 feature film screening of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel : A “must-see” from 2012. Starring  Dame Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, and Tom Wilkinson. When seven cash-strapped seniors decide to 'outsource' their retirement to a resort in far-off India, friendship and romance blossom in the most unexpected ways. The film is sweet, funny, and the views of India are very colorful.  Available on InfoSoup.
