Kindergarten & First Grade: Snow Day at the Library

Kindergarten & First Grade: Snow Day at the Library

Kindergarten and First Grade students come to the Library to celebrate snow and art by studying the Caldecott winning book The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. They will learn about animal tracks by participating in an animal track journey around the children’s department which will introduce them to the various book collections in the section. We will look at similarities and differences between types of texts. This program lasts approximately one hour.

This field trip meets the RLK.7, RIK.9 & RI1.9 (OEUs 2 & 3) Common Core Standards.

Getting library cards and/or checking out books are not a requirement to visit the library for a field trip. 

Library cards may be obtained for your students if desired. The School Age Librarian will email you the application, along with important details about how to get the cards. If you choose to check out books, add 30 minutes to the amount of time you plan to stay at the library.

All library programs are free and school-age programs are taught by a professional librarian. Classrooms consisting of more than one grade may attend the program of their choice and the program will be appropriately modified. Please ask us if you would like help combining this fieldtrip with a stop at another downtown Appleton destination.

Second Grade: Hooked on Books

Hooked on Books

Encourage your students to become strong, independent readers! This program will introduce students to a wide variety of books featuring characters just like them. We'll also take a tour of the Children’s Services department. Expect this program to last approximately one hour.

This field trip meets the RL2.3 (OEU 1) Common Core Standard.

Getting library cards and/or checking out books are not a requirement to visit the library for a field trip.

Library cards may be obtained for your students if desired. This requires that completed library card applications be returned to the library at least 10 days before the visit, accompanied by a class list showing the students’ home addresses. If you choose to check out books, please add 30 minutes to the amount of time you plan to stay at the library.

All library programs are free and school-age programs are taught by a professional librarian. Drop in and create a Lego masterpiece.

B.E.A.R. Bingo: Be Excited About Reading!

Registration Details: 

Register at the library or online starting November 1.

Complete five activities across, vertically, or diagonally to get BINGO! Cross out activities that you complete. You may read to yourself, read to someone else or listen to books. You may complete five BINGOs for up to five spins of the wheel. Five BINGOs also earns a chance at a final drawing. A blackout on the BINGO board earns a second chance in the drawing. One BINGO sheet per child. November 30 is the last day to pick up prizes.  Registration is required. 

This program is ideal for students in classroom settings. Exceptions for prize pickup after November 30 will be made for teachers who are picking up prizes for their students. Contact Ann at acooksey@apl.org or call 920-832-6189 to register your classroom, rather than using the online form. You will be emailed a PDF of the Bingo board to use with your students.

Fifth & Sixth Grade: What's Your Genre?

What's Your Genre

Explore books featuring a large range of genres. We'll also discuss novels that have been adapted to a graphic novel format. Students will learn advanced techniques for accessing Infosoup, our online catalog. A tour of the Children's Services department is also provided. This program lasts approximately one hour.

This field trip meets RL5.7, RL5.9, RL6.9 (OEU 4) Common Core Standards.

Getting library cards and/or checking out books are not a requirement to visit the library for a field trip.

Find popular books that demonstrate first, second, and third person points of view. Students will also learn skills for using Infosoup, our online catalog. A tour of the Children's Services department is included. This program lasts approximately one hour.
