May 2 | 2:00-4:00 pm
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Hmong migration to the United States, following the Vietnam War. The first Hmong families who came to Appleton were refugees who arrived with very little or nothing; including a homeland. Today, Appleton is home to just over 3,100 Hmong.
Over the years the Hmong have progressed to becoming business owners, politicians, lawyers, doctors and teachers, among other professions.
To commemorate this special anniversary, we are celebrating Hmong culture and history during a special event Saturday, May 2 beginning at 2:00 pm. Our goal is to promote knowledge of the Hmong community’s culture, history and arts to people of all backgrounds. This event will include activities and entertainment related to the Hmong culture.
An exhibit will showcase contributions the Hmong have made in the Fox Cities. There will be displays of art, artifacts and photography. Noah Vang, a researcher and writer from Minnesota, will speak about the Hmong’s immigration to the United States. Local students and children from our Appleton Ready to Read program will perform songs, dance and play musical instruments. There will also be a fashion show with traditional clothing and delicious Hmong treats.
To learn more about the Hmong culture, visit our Hmong Resource Center, located on our first floor. The Hmong Resource Center provides access to materials in the Hmong language and related to Hmong culture. There are books for all ages, music CDs and movies, for entertainment and knowledge.
