Accessibility
We strive to provide library spaces that are welcoming, inclusive, and accessible for our community.
BUILDING FEATURES
Our renovated facility has several features to increase accessibility.
Parking and Entrance
We have eight handicapped parking spots in our parking lot. Our entrance features a level approach with a wave-activated automatic door. An elevator is located near the entrance for access to all levels.
Restrooms
We have two companion care restrooms featuring adult changing stations. Our lower-level children’s area restrooms feature two family rooms with child-size toilets. All restrooms meet ADA clearances and are equipped with grab bars.
Hearing Loop
All of our service desks, the Mary Beth Nienhaus Community Meeting Rooms, and the Cornerstone Conference room are equipped with hearing loops.
Community Meeting Room Stage
An ADA-compliant portable stage and ramp system is available for library programs, civic events, and community bookings. The stage and ramp were funded by a generous grant from the Wispact Foundation and Friends of Appleton Public Library.
Sensory Room
Our Sensory Room supports individuals with sensory processing differences by providing a calming environment. The space is designed for children and youth but is accessible to individuals of all ages and abilities. Users under age 16 must have a caregiver with them to use the space.
Children’s Garden
The Children’s Garden, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Appleton, features accessible outdoor musical instruments.
The open horseshoe design of the Tubular Bells allows users to position themselves at the center of the installation and enjoy the full surround sound experience. This design also creates a sensory experience as players may feel the musical vibrations of the bells. The Duo’s gentle, offset wave shape reduces the need for direct eye contact and provides wheelchair accessibility.
