Help Using Overdrive with Kindles
Kindle with black and white screens (old kindle, kindle paper white, etc.)
The Libby app is not available on these devices. You can send books to these devices when browsing via the web or via the Libby app on your phone (this only works for items listed as “Kindle Book” format):
In Your Web Browser
- Check out an item that’s in Kindle Book format. You can browse Kindle Books via the top navigation bar or you can limit your search to items available in Kindle Book format.
- After clicking “Borrow”, click the “Read now with Kindle” button.
- This will take you to Amazon. Log into your Amazon account.
- After logging in, you’ll be prompted (“deliver to”) to select the Amazon device you’ll be using.
- Select your device and click “Get library book.”
- The item should show up on your Kindle device. If you’re in the library building, you may have to connect to WIFI for the title to appear.
Via the App
Make sure you’re using the Libby by Overdrive app and not the unsupported OverDrive app (with the blue icon):
- Check out an item available in Kindle Book format in your Libby app.
- Navigate to your shelf.
- On the title you want to send to your Kindle, click on “Read with Kindle.”
The Kindle Book format remains available to users in the United States only.
Amazon Fire Tablets (Color Screens)
Users with Amazon Fire tablets should download Libby directly from the Amazon Appstore instead of manually sideloading the app.
- The OverDrive app was removed from the Amazon Appstore. Fire tablet users who already have the OverDrive app installed can continue to use it for now, but it is no longer in active development. The OverDrive app will display messaging encouraging those with compatible devices to upgrade to Libby.
- The webpage that hosted OverDrive’s Libby APK instructions will redirect users to the Amazon Appstore to download Libby. Users with OverDrive’s Libby APK on their Fire tablet can continue to use that version.
- Note: Users who switch from the APK version to the Amazon Appstore version of Libby may lose their Libby timeline activity, search history, and app customizations.
- They will not lose their loans, holds, or tags.
