Reach Out and Read gives children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together. Parents are encouraged to read aloud daily as a simple and effective way to foster nurturing, language-rich family interactions that support brain development and provide a foundation for success.

Reach Out and Read Partners – Fox Cities is supported by United Way Fox Cities and brings the regional medical community and public libraries together to make Reach Out and Read a standard of care. Reach Out and Read Partners – Fox Cities is a local affiliate of Reach Out and Read – Wisconsin and the national Reach Out and Read organization.

Reading Tips for Parents

Parents are their children’s first and most important teachers. Children grow up to become readers when their parents read to them from birth.

  • Make reading with your child part of the daily routine; a few minutes of reading is okay.
  • Don’t be discouraged if your child doesn’t seem interested at first or every time.
  • Always be positive even if your reading time together doesn’t go as well as you had hoped.
  • Have fun!
  • Some children prefer to multi-task while you read to them. They may prefer to play with toys while they listen.
  • Let your child turn the pages and ask questions if they initiate this behavior.
  • Make the story come alive.
  • Let your child tell the story to you.
  • Visit your local public library. Librarians can help you select fun and age-appropriate books.

Three Elements of Great Reading Spaces for Children

1. A cozy seat to snuggle into along with some pillows and blankets.

2. A fun book assortment displayed in baskets, boxes, or a forward-facing shelf.

3. A well-lit area or near a window for natural light.
